In Nepal, the legal age for marriage is clearly defined by the National Civil Code, 2017 (2074).
Legal Age for Marriage in Nepal:
According to Section 70 of the National Civil Code, 2017 (2074):
"A man and a woman shall have attained the age of twenty years to conclude a marriage."
This means:
β’ Both the bride and groom must be at least 20 years old.
β’ Parental consent does NOT override this minimum age requirement.
Can someone get married at 18 with parental consent?
No. Even if both families agree and give written or verbal consent, marriage below 20 years of age is not legally valid in Nepal.
Prior to the enactment of the National Civil Code, 2017, the Muluki Ain allowed marriage at 18 with parental consent. However, this has been completely repealed. The law now uniformly requires both parties to be 20 years or older, regardless of consent.
Legal Consequences of Underage Marriage:
β’ Underage marriage is punishable by law under the National Civil Code and the Childrenβs Act, 2018.
β’ Those who facilitate, conduct, or knowingly participate in such marriages can be prosecuted, including parents, priests, and marriage registrars.
Minimum legal age for marriage in Nepal: 20 years for both male and female.
Marriage before 20 is invalid even with parental consent.
