Kathmandu, Bhadra 07 - The family of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary who was murdered in Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1, Bara and the Nepal government have reached a three-point agreement after midnight talks at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The agreement reflects the family's demands while committing the government to proceed with the judicial process in the case.
One of the main elements of the agreement is that the government will review Nepal's existing laws on offences and punishments for heinous crimes. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will set up a seven-member “Garima Justice Resolution Committee”, whose job is to evaluate the existing legal framework and provide a report within seven days, possibly with proposals recommending new laws.
The government also has agreed to take the initiative to construct a statue of Garima Chaudhary, in coordination with the local government and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, at the family's request. The agreement also stipulates that Garima's parents may conduct her funeral as per their traditions and customs.
Several government ministers like the ministers of home affairs, law and justice, infrastructure development and women and children signed the agreement and Garima's parents signed on behalf of the family. The government committed to advancing judicial process while addressing the demands raised by the victim's family.
The development is especially significant because the case may now lead to a broader review of Nepal's criminal laws and punishments for serious offences, depending on the recommendations made by the newly formed committee.
