Kathmandu, Shrawan 11 – Nepal Police have arrested a teacher in connection with the suspected leaking of an examination paper of Tribhuvan University through WhatsApp shortly after the examination began.
A paper of the first semester’s Master of Business Studies examination was reportedly shared in a WhatsApp group within five minutes of the examination being started on July 24. The matter became public after the screenshots of the group conversation were posted on social media. Teacher Sandip Singh, widely referred to as “Sulab Sir” by his students, has been arrested from Bhaktapur. He teaches at Himalaya College in Koteshwor, and KMC College, Bagbazar. Police have initiated an investigation against him for allegedly violating provisions related to examination confidentiality under the Education Act, 1971.
The WhatsApp group reportedly has more than 1,000 participants. Screenshots posted online showed the questions paper being circulated while the examination was underway. In addition, 16-page handwritten solution to the examination questions was also shared in the group.
During questioning, Singh claimed that he had only forwarded a question paper sent to him by an anonymous source. According to the investigators, there is no evidence showing that he received any financial benefit from this act. Further investigation into the TU paper leak is still ongoing to identify the original source of the leaked examination paper and determine whether any other individuals were involved in the incident. The investigation will also examine how the question paper leak occurred and whether there was a coordinated effort behind the alleged exam paper leak.
Following the incident, Tribhuvan University's Faculty of Management formed an investigation committee led by Professor Dr. Achyut Gyawali. The committee has been tasked with verifying whether the question paper leak actually occurred, identifying the cause of the leak, determining accountability, and recommending appropriate legal action under the applicable laws. The findings are expected to play a key role in addressing concerns surrounding the TU paper leak and strengthening the university's examination security.
Further, the Free Student Union of Tribhuvan University has also demanded a fair investigation and publication of the findings. It stated that this incident has raised serious concerns regarding the security, fairness and credibility of the university’s examination system.
